Matt Bomer Says He Lost His Superman Deal After Being Outed As Gay

Matt Bomer revealed in a new podcast interview that he missed out on playing Superman in the early 2000s due to his sexuality. “It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role,” the actor said. “I signed a three-picture deal at Warner Bros.” The producers of the soap opera Guiding Light even wrote off Bomer’s character in anticipation of him landing the role. But he believes his sexual orientation ultimately cost him the role. “That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you,” he said. “How, and why, and who, I don’t know, but yeah, that’s my understanding.” Ultimately the project, written by J.J. Abrams and known as Superman: Flyby, was never realized, and Bryan Singer directed Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh, instead. (People)
