Updated: IU legend Bobby Knight dead at 83

Legendary college basketball coach Bobby Knight is dead at the age of 83.

After being fired by IU in 2000, many fans were angry toward the school. Fischer said that seems to have been laid to rest after Knight returned to Assembly Hall for an IU game against Purdue in 2020.

Fans, friends and family members are remembering  Knight after his death was announced Wednesday.

Former Columbus East basketball coach Brent Chitty had many interactions with Knight over the years including coaching at Knight’s basketball camps.

While at Bloomington North, Chitty coached Knight’s son on the school’s freshman team. He recalls his first meeting with Knight at a game, after not putting Pat Knight into the starting line up.

Chitty reflected on what Knight mean to Indiana and IU basketball:

Knight was an Ohio native who led the Indiana Hoosiers to five NCAA Final Four appearances and three national championships in 29 seasons and more than 900 games with the school.  Knight began serving as a head coach in 1965 at Army before taking the Indiana job in 1971. He would serve as coach of the Hoosiers until 2000 and finished his career with Texas Tech, retiring from coaching in 2008.

His family said “We will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.”
